Incised lettering (i.e. cut into, as opposed to relief) may be filled in three ways:

Gilded - Gold Leaf

Cut & painted

Gilded gives the impression of quality and can be easily cleaned with water. The material is cut either by chisel, machine or sandblasted. A coat of black paint is then applied to seal any flaws in the stone. When dry apply a coat of yellow is put on then Gold Leaf applied.

This can be easily be redone if an additional inscription is added at a later date and different colours can be used. The material is cut by chisel, machine or sandblasted and then painted with 2-3 coats

This is the traditional method of lettering when the material is cut by either chisel or machine, then a lead strip is hammered into the letter and is held in by the lead expanding.

Suggested Inscriptions

Traditionally, memorials have always followed a conventional format of four lines plus the deceased's name.

Line 1, shows that you wish to remember your loved one.
Line 2, states your relationship to the deceased.
Line 3, is the name of the deceased.
Line 4, is usually the dates of the deceased's life.
Line 5, can describe your thoughts, feelings and memories.

The base of the memorial may also be used for inscription.

The following are only guidelines for each line of the inscription, your memorial can be personalised to your own wishes. Our staff will be pleased to help or advise, whatever your choice.
